7/1/2010 - Denver, CO - Bilingual (Spanish-English) Elementary teacher
Teach in Colorado
Denver Public Schools is a dynamic and diverse urban school district committed to providing all students with the opportunity to achieve and the expectation of success. Our district serves a significant native-Spanish speaking population: 40% of our students speak Spanish as their primary language, and half of those are English Language Learners. We know the strength of our teachers is the key to ensuring that our students have the needed support to stay on-level with their English-speaking peers while making their transition to English instruction. If you are a bilingual (English/ Spanish) teacher who is inspired by the challenge of making sure every child is given an equal opportunity to succeed, we invite you to be part of our impressive team of educators. While our Principals value bilingual educators at all levels, our formal bilingual programs are at the elementary level, and that is the largest area of need across our district. About our District DPS serves over 78,000 students and is comprised of 152 schools, each as different and unique as the student population it serves: 75% of our students are students of color, and 55% of the school district is Latino; 70% percent of our students qualify for free and reduced lunch; 130 different languages are spoken in students homes. We celebrate the diversity in our schools, and our educators consistently identify our diverse student population as one of the top reasons for teaching in our district. As of October 1, 2009, there are 24,519 English Language Learners (ELLs) in grades Early Childhood through 12 in Denver Public Schools. Among them, 16,220 ELLs receive English Language Acquisition services (ELA) in one of our ELA program schools. English Language Acquisition Program The goal of the English Language Acquisition program is to use efficient and effective educational methods to provide students with the English language skills they need to meaningfully participate in the district's mainstream English language instructional program. Those methods include early transition, dual language, ESL and sheltered instruction. Requirements In order to teach in a bilingual, English Language Acquisition classroom for native Spanish speakers (ELA-S), all candidates must hold a valid, state-issued elementary teaching certificate in addition to passing a district exam verifying your oral, reading and written proficiency in Spanish. You do not need to pass the exam prior to applying for positions.
